Guatemala Mission
First Presbyterian Church
Our concern for others extends beyond local and national boundaries to the highlands of Guatemala to support the Maya Quiche Presbytery of 22 churches first organized in 1959.
We have joined other churches of Heartland Presbytery in a partnership with this indigenous presbytery . Teams from our Presbytery visit frequently to better understand the Mayan culture and history and search for ways to assist them.
Last November two members, Chuck and Bobbi Zimmerman, went with a team on a fact finding trip. They visited some of the churches, dined with the pastors of the churches and visited one of their water projects in the lowlands.
We are sending six members with a group visiting Oct.29 to Nov. 7. We will observe All Saints Day with them on Nov. 1. The trip continues our mission to build our relationship and to partner in projects with these churches. We have sent a check for $500 to help buy new filters for the water purification systems.
The Maya Quiche Presbytery will celebrate their golden anniversary this summer. We are one of 22 churches in our Presbytery that will send an original banner as our gift to them. Each church will receive a banner to hang in their church to remind them that we are partners working with them. The banner was a collaboration of four women in the church.
